If you are a walker or have done some walking in the past you will have some idea of the equipment required. If you are new to rambling and are not sure of what to buy, we can offer advice based on experience.
Clothing is, of course, largely a matter of personal choice. There many specialist retailers in our area who cater for every taste and pocket. Some of them offer discounts to the ramblers. However, the following items are considered by most people as essential requirements.
A stout pair of walking boots or walking shoes that are suitable for rough ground. Most fashion trainers are unsuitable for the task and should be avoided. We recommend going to a retailer who will measure your feet to ensure the correct fitting and comfort, as this will be time and money well spent.
A waterproof outdoor jacket to keep out the wet, yes it does rain occasionally. These come in various styles and weights, summer and the all season with facility to zip in a fleece for cooler days. Again careful choice will pay off.
. .
A rucksack that will hold a spot of lunch, a drink, and clothing that you may not be wearing at the beginning of the walk but may need later on.
You do not need to have special trousers. But look out for ones that offer comfort with quick drying abilities, You may want to consider over trousers for extreme weather that can catch us out. Note:- Denim jeans may be hard wearing, but they have no thermal value and if they get wet, they can be tiresome at the least.
Some other items that can be useful include walking poles (some walkers use them to give that little extra added stability on rough ground), gaiters to help keep trouser bottoms dry and mud free and hat to keep off the sun or rain.
